The processing quality standard of the long axis can be ensured by using a suitable clamping method, selecting a reasonable lathe tool angle and cutting speed, etc.
Due to the influence of various factors, long-axis workpieces are prone to defects such as curved waist drum shape, polygonal shape, bamboo knot shape, etc., especially the rough surface is poor. The workpiece generally requires heat treatment such as quenching and tempering during processing. The cutting heat during turning is more likely to cause deformation of the workpiece.

Insert the long-axis workpiece into the three-jaw chuck and tighten the jaws until the chuck begins to grip the long-axis workpiece. Rotate the workpiece to ensure it is sitting evenly, and remove any chips or grit on the surface that might keep it from sitting evenly. The long-axis workpiece should be processed as parallel as possible to the center line of the lathe. Use each of the three chuck keys to tighten the chuck to ensure a tight and even grip.
Choose a tip with a slightly rounded tip, this type of tool should produce a nice smooth finish. For more aggressive cuts, a sharper cutter is recommended if long-axis workpieces require significant metal removal. Make sure the tool is clamped tightly to the tool holder. Adjust the cutter head and cutting speed, while setting the lathe processing speed and feed to start machining the long axis.
The purpose of using the lathe is to offset the influence of the radial cutting force on the workpiece during the machining process, reduce cutting vibration and deformation of the workpiece due to insufficient rigidity. When using a follow-up lathe, it is necessary to ensure that the center of the numbering bed is consistent with the center of the turret, because the characteristics of the turret are not suitable for workpieces that require Swiss turning twice, and can only be turned once in situ.
